Checkout toggle and subscriptions

The old subscription path behaved like a separate upsell. It interrupted checkout, added another decision point, and made the relationship between the immediate purchase and the recurring option harder to understand.

I brought the choice into checkout, at the moment when the product, price, and next step were already in view. The control itself was only a toggle. The actual design work was everything around it: plain-language pricing, a clear default state, an obvious way back, and confirmation copy that did not hide the recurring commitment.

The uncomfortable question was whether easier conversion would create regret later. We treated consent as a product requirement, tested the wording and confirmation pattern before rollout, and watched charge-related support tickets alongside subscriptions.

Subscriptions increased 300% relative to the previous flow while reports of unexpected charges stayed flat. That distinction matters: it was a relative lift, not a 300-point conversion rate, and the guardrail mattered as much as the growth number.
